As with most years, the valuation of bitcoin has varied dramatically, making price volatility a constant feature of bitcoin. Price wise, bitcoin has had a bumper 2021 and has reached new highs. As of November 2021, one bitcoin is valued at around £40,000, whereas in July of the same year, it was worth less than half this amount, at around £21,000. While in both the first and second halves of the year, bitcoin has been sitting at around the £40,000 mark, in the mid-point of the year, almost half of this value was wiped off in a very short space of time. The most recent candidate was Craig Wright, a former Australian academic, who claimed to be the bitcoin inventor. Wright wrote blog posts and gave interviews to Wired, BBC and the Economist in 2015 and 2016 saying he was behind bitcoin. There have been spikes along the way, possibly caused by mass computer trading orshort sellers jumping ship and encouraging buyers to flood back in.

The risk is that, across history, plenty of governments have collapsed, and their currencies have gone with them. And even those countries which are still successful today have had plenty of hairy moments. Ultimately, the pound is worth something because the UK government says that it has value. In effect, the pound is backed by the strength of the UK’s economy and institutions, and in the ability of the government to tax the populace.
